Learn the right steps to store your carbon fiber tent poles over winter to prevent damage from moisture, temperature swings, and compression. Keep them ready for spring.
Quick answer
Store your carbon fiber tent poles clean, dry, and loosely bundled in a cool, stable indoor environment. Avoid tight compression, extreme cold, and moisture to prevent cracks and delamination.
Why carbon fiber needs different care than aluminum
Carbon fiber poles are strong and lightweight, but they are more brittle than aluminum in cold temperatures. They can also develop set memory if stored under tension or in extreme cold for long periods. Moisture trapped inside the pole sections can freeze and expand, potentially causing micro-cracks. That is why a few extra steps during storage pay off.
How to store your carbon fiber tent poles for winter
- Clean and dry each section: Wipe down every pole segment with a damp cloth to remove dirt, mud, and debris. Pay attention to the ferrules and shock cord ends. Dry each piece thoroughly with a clean towel. Moisture left inside can freeze and expand, cracking the carbon fiber. A common mistake is skipping the drying step—even a few drops inside a ferrule can cause damage in sub-freezing temps.
- Inspect for cracks or splinters: Hold each section up to light and run your fingers along the surface. Look for hairline cracks, splintering, or rough spots. If you find damage, mark the section and plan to repair or replace it before next use. Carbon fiber can fail suddenly if a crack worsens under load.
- Loosely bundle the disassembled sections: Disassemble the pole set into its individual sections. For a three-piece pole like the Rincon 2P center pole, each section stores flat. Bundle them together loosely with a twist tie or a small cord—do not use a tight rubber band that can dent the carbon. Avoid rolling the bundle tightly or stuffing it into a cramped sack. Storing poles under tension or in a tight coil can cause set memory, making them harder to assemble next season.
- Store in a climate-controlled indoor space: Place the bundled poles in a breathable storage bag or a cotton sack. Keep them in a closet, gear room, or basement where temperatures stay above freezing and humidity is low. Avoid attics, garages, or sheds that experience wide temperature swings. Even a single night in a freezing garage can stress the resin matrix in carbon fiber.
- Label and store away from heavy objects: Write the tent model and pole length on the storage bag with a permanent marker. Store the bag on a shelf or hook where nothing heavy will be placed on top of it. Crushing a carbon fiber pole under a stack of gear is the fastest way to cause hidden damage.
